Home / Training / FAQs / Add a Wrap Around Banner in Photoshop CS4

An effective way of adding special offer information, or basic pricing is often the use of a splash banner, usually a diagonal stripe with the message or call to action.  By creating a more three dimensional version this can dramatically improve the appearance of the banner - with minimal additional design effort.

Any image or base banner can be used - for this tutorial I will be adding the wrap banner from the article main image.

Starting image Add a 2 pixel border

  • Open your base image in Photoshop and duplicate the background, it's always safest to keep the original image in case of problems.
  • Add a 2px border, in this case I'm using white as that is my background colour, use thecolour that suits your design, to the inside of the image.
add a rectangle rotate the banner
  • Create a new layer and draw a rectangle, to save time you should use the colour you want the banner, however we can fix it up using layer formatting if needed.  I will show the layer formatting in this tutorial just in case you need it.
  • Rotate the rectangle using ctrl + t .  You will need to 'grab' the curved arrow with you mouse whilst holding the shift key and rotate to get a neat 45 degree angle then align with the corner of your image.

Stroke settings Layers Panel

  • To get the shading, you can either add a drop shadow through layer properties, or as in this example create a duplicate layer and move it 1pixel down and 1 pixel to the left.  Move the layer in the layers panel to beneath the original. I have set the opacity of the new layer to 39% in the layers panel and set the layer colour to a dark grey (#2D2C2C).
  • I have also added a new colour to the top layer and a 1 pixel stroke to the inside to highlight the banner with a contrast.
  • Add the call to action text and rotate to a matching angle using the same ctrl + t followed by grabbing and holding the Shift key combination.
